Specs and Limits

Specifications and Limitations:

  • The houseboat must accommodate to the clients requests. (s)
Limitations:
  • At least 2 beds required.
  • Requires a kitchen.
  • Nature theme incorporated into design. 
  • Cannot be one story (loft area required).
  • At least one bathroom.
  • Cannot have too many rooms clustered together
  • The houseboat must be aesthetically pleasing to the client. (c) 
Limitations:
    • Must have windows.
    • Cannot stray from nature theme required by client.
  • The solution must be safe for the user. (c)
Limitations:
    • Cannot have too many windows.
    • Cannot exceed any speeds (about 10 knots) that would become a risk for the ship's safety.
    • Cannot risk the structural integrity of the ship when designing.
    • Cannot build houseboat too high.
    • Cannot have a square-like shape to the houseboat (length=width).
    • Cannot have an open roof.
    • Cannot have less than 2 exits.
  • The solution must be an appropriate size ("appropriate" defined by limits below). (c)
Limitations:
    • Cannot have equal length and width.
    • Cannot have wide width and short length.
    • Cannot have length longer than 75 feet.
    • Cannot have width wider than 20 feet.
    • Cannot be larger than the designs by Fletcher Kirol.
    • House portion of houseboat cannot cover entire surface of boat.
    • Cannot be so large that the houseboat cannot maneuver through river connecting lakes.
  • The solution must abide to legal requirements. (c)
Limitations
    • Cannot have unsanitary living conditions which would result unsuitable on land.
    • Cannot live aboard without a permit.
    • Cannot exceed anchorage restrictions which are dependent on one's location.
    • Cannot leave designated area for vessels dependent on state..
  • The solution must be able to survive in the environment of the Great Lakes. (s)
  • Limitations:
      • Must withstand cold weather and blizzards in the winter.
      • Must withstand heavy winds.
    • The solution must have a good flow from between rooms and allow a person to conveniently live. (s)
    Limitations:
      • Cannot have rooms that work in unison be separated across the house.
      • Some rooms must combine (Ex. kitchen and living room).
      • Cannot not have rooms and hallways too small or inconveniently placed for users.
    • The solution must be made of materials suitable for the water conditions. (c)
    Limitations:
    • Cannot have flimsy materials on the exterior.
    • Cannot have non-water proof exterior.
    • Cannot not have walls that allow air flow through them.
    • Cannot have materials too heavy risking collapse.
